Tomato Onion Chutney | Dosa Chutney

Today’s recipe is ‘Tomato Onion Chutney’. I love every dish which is made of tomato 😀 . If not stopped by blogger inside me, I would love to add tomato in every dish prepared by me 😛 . Let’s get back to today’s recipe 😀 , this chutney is usually served with south-indian dishes like dosa and utappam. You can also enjoy it with parathas and snacks.

For this chutney you will need tomato, onion, garlic, curry leaves, two variety of lentils and few spices. It is 15 mins recipe and you can store it for 3-4 days easily. You can check more chutney recipes here.

Ingredients for Tomato Onion Chutney

Tomato 2 medium sized
Onion1 medium
Garlic cloves2-3 nos.
Oil2 tsp
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Black gram (split)/Urad dal1 tsp
Red lentil/Masoor dal1 tsp
Salt1/2 tsp or as per taste
Red chilli (whole)4 or as per taste
For Tempering-
Curry leavesOne sprig
Cumin seeds / Jeera1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds/Rai1/2 tsp
Hing/Asafoetidaa pinch
Black gram (split)/Urad dal1 tsp
Oil1 Tbsp

Method for Tomato Onion Chutney

  • Wash and roughly chop onion and tomato.
  • In a pan, dry roast split black gram dal, cumin seeds and red lentil. Keep it aside and let it cool.

  • Grind the above roasted ingredients and keep aside.

  • In pan heat 1 Tbsp oil. Add whole red chillies. Saute for few seconds.

  • Add onion and garlic, saute till onion turn tender and translucent.

  • Next, add chopped tomatoes. Fry till tomatoes are soft.

  • Let the above mix cool down, in a mixer add, tomato-onion-garlic-red chilli mix with the lentils cumin seeds powder and salt. Keep it aside.

  • In a pan, heat 1 Tbsp oil, add all the ingredients of temper and saute for 2-3 mins. Temper chutney.

  • Tomato onion chutney is ready to be served.

  1. Tomato is my fav too, kind of national vegetable 😀 I cannot make dosas/parathas at home but will try making this delicious chutney 😛 🙂
